Magnetic particle Testing used for the finding of surface and near surface defects in ferromagnetic materials material such as iron, nickel, and cobalt, and some of their alloys and is primarily used for crack detection.
The test sample is magnetised either locally or overall. If there is a surface-breaking defect, the magnetic field is distorted, causing flux leakage around the defect. This leakage flux is displayed at the surface with very fine iron particles applied either dry or suspended in a liquid. The particles accumulate at the regions of flux leakage which can be seen visually. Thus, a crack/defectis indicated as a line ofiron powder particles on the surface.
